Change is inevitable. Technology has a significant impact in our lives nowadays and our world revolves around it. Adults and children live with gadgets, cellphone being the most common, and has become a norm in the culture wherever you go (Bastable, 2014).
In a research from Stafford Global (2020), a few advantages were pointed out with online learning:
· Students access courses and materials without time restrictions
· Online learning works around the schedule of learners, especially adult learners who have a day job and study after work.
· Students have access to applications that can increase their learning through different styles of interactive learning.
· Assessments of students in online learning are based on assignments, group interactions through a discussion board, and creating study groups.
· Online learning can be accessed anywhere around the world.
· Online learning is self-paced.
Online learning developed the ability of the students to develop self-discipline and time management. It takes a lot of commitment and motivation for a student to complete and submit assignments in a timely manner on top of daily responsibilities at work and at home. This tells more about a person and their ability to complete the course despite the challenges that they are facing. Online learning makes it possible for a person to obtain a degree in the comfort of their own home or even on vacation (Stafford Global, 2020).
However, in a research from Computer Systems Institute (2015), five reasons were pointed out:
· Higher attendance
· Increased peer interaction
· Immediate clarification of lessons that are not clear
· Improved retention of information
· Campus experience is more enhanced
Each individual learns differently. Some prefer in-person learning while others perform well with virtual learning. As a nurse educator, these are the factors that need to be considered so students can succeed in their academic path. I will consider the behavior of the common public. Although some people prefer in-person learning, they somehow love to use technology for entertainment purposes. To make learning effective, I will make my lessons creative and entertaining, such as making a short movie clip for different topics, having a group activity where they will do role playing with videos on to show their costumes, and use interactive play for quizzes and tests to make it more engaging. This will also benefit the students who choose virtual learning because they do not sit in one place for a long time falling asleep, rather they will enjoy being in class and expect for more surprises from the nurse educator.

My forehead is feeling hot, and I am becoming diaphoretic! This is how I feel sometimes with starting off with a presentation on the virtual application called Microsoft Teams. When I present, I log on early to greet everyone with a “live” video, or a face time with my volume on…the next thing you know the app sends me a pop-up message, saying, “hold a moment, we are getting things ready for you”. I look at the clock and I have 3-4 minutes before “go time” as I call it, or when it is time to present. A lot of us had to expand to this virtual capacity due to meeting restrictions at our health care system, and in other health care systems alike, and to utilize a virtual platform whenever possible. Currently we are doing this with our online classroom presenting when across our health care system. This all of course is from my perspective as an educator, maybe other apps are more stable from a tech stand point. But, all in all… Microsoft Teams has been a great way to deliver content and still have staff obtain the content, as opposed to simply reading emails, or being in a crowded room. I think “students in the seat model”, is more straight forward, you turn on the lights, make sure the room temperature is adequate, and make sure the space is neat and professional and conducive to the learning environment. Side note, it was great last spring when the Rocky Mountain region got 2′ feet of snow, students were allowed to stay home and learn instead of venturing out onto the icy and snowy roads conditions.

Student engagement can be somewhat of a focus thou. When I see other educators present…I see students attention wondering off onto other apps on their devices, smartphones, and tablets. I think to myself…are they really obtaining the required learning content conducive to providing safe patient care in the operating room? We have a soft rule about utilizing, netiquette”. For example, a student should leave their webcam on if their device is equipped. The issue with Teams is, two microphones cannot be on at once. Also, students will sometime send text messages on their phone. All this is not super frequent, but as I observe this…I think to myself, how can I maintain a high degree of focus and participation? Periodically, I will ask if there are any questions, or try to stimulate discussions through voice, or the instant message feature. We also utilize the Kahoot quiz platform. A connected classroom utilizes digital technology to connect students to facilitate learning, (Billings, 2016, p. 327). This approach can help with interactivity and helps with student engagement.
